MEET JOSIAH: TRADER, VAN REES CEYLON

From tourism to tea trading

“My journey into the tea industry was quite unexpected. After graduating in 2019, I was set on a career in tourism and hospitality. But like many others, the pandemic forced me to reevaluate my plans. With a family connection—my grandfather spent over 45 years in the tea industry—I decided to explore what this world had to offer. A short stint at a tea brokering company in 2020 was all it took; since then, I’ve never looked back. The sheer variety and richness among our teas from Sri Lanka got me ‘hooked’. No two teas are exactly the same, and understanding the nuances of each region is a fascinating journey in itself.

My role at Van Rees

As a Tea Trader at Van Rees Ceylon, I wear multiple hats. Tasting and grading tea before the weekly auction is one of my key responsibilities. It’s essential to ensure we select the right tea at the right price to maintain the quality of our blends. After purchasing the teas, I work on creating blends tailored to our clients’ needs. Marketing and sales are integral to this role, allowing me to connect with clients and strengthen the overall trading process. Working at Van Rees means immersing yourself in a dynamic and rewarding industry. The work is challenging but incredibly fulfilling, especially when you see how your contributions make a tangible impact on the quality of a cup of tea enjoyed around the world.

Why tea trading excites me

The diversity within Van Rees makes every day interesting. Working with a multifaceted team spread across various countries is truly enriching, and the positive work culture within our office adds to the appeal. It’s rewarding to see how our efforts directly contribute to delivering exceptional teas to clients worldwide. Moreover, sustainability and responsible sourcing are becoming more integral to our operations, and I’m proud to be part of this movement. Ensuring quality while maintaining ethical practices is a challenge I gladly take on. As the industry evolves, I hope to see even greater emphasis on transparency and collaboration across the supply chain.”
