MEET SATHISH: MANAGER OF TRADING, VAN REES INDIA
Rolling into the tea trade
“My journey into the tea industry was unexpected. Growing up in Tamil Nadu, I was more focused on cricket than career plans. A friend introduced me to the tea industry, and it immediately caught my interest. I started as a tea trader at a family-run tea trading company with over 100 years of history. Three years ago, I joined Van Rees India. It’s been a rewarding journey, filled with growth and learning.
From tea auctions to blends
At Van Rees India, I work as the Manager of Trading. I actively participate in the weekly tea auctions, where teas are sold to buyers from across India. The process begins with tasting the teas in the auction catalogue and making detailed observations on their profiles and quality. Based on this, we decide which teas to purchase for our blends.
Indian teas face tough competition from other tea origins. To stay competitive in the global market, we continuously innovate, enhance product quality, and maintain competitive pricing.
The specialty of South Indian teas
Different regions in India produce very distinct teas. While Assam is known for its strong, malty taste, briskness, and bright color, Darjeeling teas are light and aromatic, with fruity and floral notes. My personal favorites, however, are the teas from South India. Especially from high-altitude gardens.
The altitude and climate of the estates in South India significantly impact the flavor and quality of the tea. Nilgiri high-altitude teas have a vibrant golden yellow cup with intense flavor, while Munnar teas offer a malty and brisk golden yellow cup. Meanwhile, the teas from the lower elevations of the Anamallais have a light golden cup with robust briskness and a delightful aroma.
More than just a beverage
And what everyone should know: tea is more than just a drink! It’s a source of antioxidants, and the caffeine and L-theanine it contains provide longer periods of alertness. It’s a daily staple with nice health benefits. I’m proud to be part of its supply chain, helping more people experience the taste and quality of Indian teas, especially those from the South!”
